The CBNS was created as a national certifying body in response to the many advanced degree nutritionists (master's and doctoral level) that seek more formal recognition of their knowledge, skills and experience. The protected title of Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) is awarded by CBNS to those nutritionists meeting defined educational, experience and examination requirements.

The American Clinical Board of Nutrition (ACBN) Founded in 1986 the ACBN is a professional certification organization acting in the public interest by establishing education, examination, experience, and ethics requirements for certification. The ACBN accepts all professionals beyond the doctorate level who qualify, without discrimination, to sit for the nutrition examination. Professionals who successfully pass the two part examination are designated as Diplomates of the American Clinical Board of Nutrition (DACBN) and are certificants of this certifying agency. ACBN has recently attained the singular distinction of receiving full accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
